In The Air: Explosions, Chapter 14, Part 4

“Target is gone.” read the radar operator from his large blinking wall display.
A commander sitting central to the room looked over, it was clear the target was gone, but why?
“Our interceptor, is it still 3 minutes out?” he requested. “Did it engage?”
“No Sir, I'm bringing him back.” said another voice to the operators side.
“What? Was there a failure, what's on the scanners?” The commander requested leaning forward slightly.
“It's a mess up there, nothing is getting through that debris field.” The operator shaking his heard turned to the controller at his side.
He paused, fearful that he had interrupted the procedure.
“The debris is flying high, we wait for it to pass, then we confirm the hit.” She assured.
“Keep tracking.” The commander pursued, “A good general knows when the enemy turns, it is not to run, but to attack from his flanks. Ready the guards and keep tracking the debris.”
For minutes they waited. The cloud tracking across the large radar screen.
The radar attendant stood up, “Look, Systems General, a signal!”
